On 25 March 2026, France Identité organised the third edition of the EUDIW Unfold event bringing together key stakeholders involved in the operational implementation of the future European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet). The event marked an important milestone as the ecosystem is now moving into the concrete construction phase with European specifications stabilised and national deployments accelerating. The shared objective is to enable each Member State to provide a secure interoperable digital wallet by 2026 offering services that are useful to citizens and businesses.
Gathering more than 200 participants including public authorities issuers service providers wallet developers and technology partners Unfold #3 provided a space for practical exchange collaboration and real-world testing. The agenda combined live demonstrations, Member State feedback and interactive sessions reflecting the transition from regulatory frameworks to real-world deployment. A key highlight was the France Identité live demonstration which presented recent developments such as proof of age and boating licence integration as well as upcoming features including the issuance of proof of age to another wallet and the integration of a healthcare professional card.
The roundtable discussion titled “From Regulation to Reality: EUDIW in Production by 2027” explored how the EUDI Wallet ecosystem is progressing towards deployment addressing both implementation challenges and opportunities including aspects related to cybersecurity certification. The roundtable featured contributions from key stakeholders across the digital identity ecosystem including Janice Thomas (BNP Paribas) Connor Fitzmaurice (Office of the Government Chief Information Officer of Ireland) Stéphanie de Labriolle (Secure Identity Alliance) and Florent Tournois (France Identité). Bringing together perspectives from both the public and private sectors the discussion highlighted the importance of collaboration in moving from regulatory frameworks to real-world implementation aligning closely with the broader objectives of the Aptitude project in supporting a scalable and interoperable European digital identity ecosystem.
Within this context, Aptitude showcased how the EUDI Wallet can be implemented through concrete use cases across mobility and payment scenarios including Digital Travel Credentials (DTC), tickets and check-ins, mobile vehicle registration certificates and wallet-based payment functionalities. A key element of the presentation highlighted how the EUDI Wallet can store and manage a wide range of credentials relevant to travel scenarios including core identity data such as Person Identification Data and photo ID as well as travel credentials student credentials and hospitality-related credentials such as hotel booking confirmations and digital room keys .
These use cases demonstrate how identity verification can be integrated across different stages of the user journey from authentication and booking to service access. Concrete scenarios presented during the event illustrated how travellers can combine identity data and travel credentials for airport processes, how hotel check-in can be completed digitally and how student credentials can enable access to services such as housing transport and university facilities. In this context the France Identité app will pilot identity verification across these use cases as part of the ongoing work in Aptitude.
A central component of the event was the Playground, an experimentation environment supporting interoperability testing across the ecosystem. The Playground enables asynchronous interoperability testing between wallets, issuers and verifiers, allows the deployment of test builds and interfaces to support real user journeys and facilitates access to conformance testing tools including future integration with European and industry test suites. It supports all stages of development from internal testing to piloting and ultimately to the promotion and showcasing of solutions. During the event participants also reviewed the outcomes of Interop Week which demonstrated strong ecosystem engagement with 20 issuers 30 verifiers 15 wallets and more than 500 test combinations.
Within this evolving landscape Aptitude supports the development and testing of interoperable digital identity solutions contributing to the transition from experimentation to deployment of the EUDI Wallet ecosystem. By fostering collaboration across stakeholders and supporting interoperability-focused initiatives the project contributes to building a trusted and scalable European digital identity framework.
