What does Aptitude aim to achieve?

Aptitude aims to make the European Digital Identity Wallets usable, interoperable and trusted across Europe. The project tests real-life situations such as travel, mobility, payments and vehicle ownership to ensure that the wallets work securely and seamlessly beyond national borders.

When will the wallets be available?

By the end of 2026, every EU Member State must make at least one wallet available to its citizens, in line with the eIDAS 2.0 Regulation.

When does Aptitude run and when will results be delivered?

Aptitude runs from 2025 to 2027. Large-scale cross-border pilots will start in 2026, and the final results — including technical standards, feedback and interoperability reports — will be delivered in 2027.

What are the main themes tested in Aptitude?

The project focuses on four main use cases: digital travel credentials for smoother border crossings; tickets and check-in for mobility and everyday services; mobile vehicle registration certificates for secure proof of ownership; and payments and banking for safer online transactions using strong authentication methods.

Is my data safe in my wallet app?

Yes. The wallets are designed according to privacy-by-design principles. Only the data that citizens choose to share is transmitted, always in full compliance with EU security and data-protection standards.

What makes Aptitude different from earlier pilots?

Aptitude builds on the work of earlier projects such as POTENTIAL, NOBID, DC4EU and EWC. It moves from pilot testing to large-scale, interoperable deployment, marking a decisive step towards a trusted and unified digital identity ecosystem in Europe.
