Building a digital identity that works for everyone

Across Europe, millions of people use digital services every day — to travel, study, work or pay online. But proving who you are across borders still isn’t as simple as it should be. That’s where Aptitude comes in.
Co-funded by the European Union under the Digital Europe Programme, the Aptitude consortium brings together public authorities, private companies and research organizations from several EU Member States. Its goal: to turn the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) into a practical, secure and trusted tool for citizens.
Turning ambition into action
Aptitude is one of Europe’s large-scale pilot projects testing how the EUDI Wallet can work in real life scenarios. The wallet will allow citizens to store and share their identity documents and credentials — such as ID cards, driving licences or diplomas — safely and conveniently through a single digital app.
To make this happen, the consortium is working on several complementary areas:
- Travel made easier – testing Digital Travel Credentials for smoother airport check-ins and border crossings.
- Simpler mobility – developing a Mobile Vehicle Registration Certificate that works across countries.
- Secure payments – linking the wallet to financial institutions to make online transactions safer.
- Better access to services – using digital identity to buy tickets, check in, or prove eligibility with a single click.
Each pilot helps identify what works best — technically, legally and socially — before the wallet is deployed at scale.
Innovation built on European values
Aptitude places trust, transparency and inclusion at the heart of Europe’s digital transformation. The consortium ensures that every solution respects privacy, complies with EU data protection standards, and remains accessible to all citizens. Its work also involves testing interoperability between Member States and aligning technical and legal frameworks across borders.
By combining the expertise of administrations, researchers and private partners, Aptitude shows how cooperation can make Europe’s digital identity both innovative and human-centred. The project’s results will directly feed into the European Commission’s efforts to deploy the EUDI Wallet and shape the future of secure digital services in Europe.
