“Meet the People of Aptitude” introduces the experts and innovators working behind the Aptitude project, one of Europe’s large-scale pilots testing the European Digital Identity Wallet in real-life conditions.

In this interview, we meet Anthony Carmoy, Technical Director of the France Identité Program at ANTS in France. He works at the heart of the technical infrastructure that makes the European Digital Identity Wallet trustworthy and secure. For Anthony, the wallet is a direct expression of the values Europe wants to promote for all its citizens.

What is the key element for the success of the European Digital Identity Wallet?

“The wallet is all about trust. Trust first when issuing wallets and receiving credentials. There is the trust between the user and their government the administration has to be able to issue those very essential credentials in the wallet. But then there is also the trust from the user to the service provider. It is about privacy, and the race for privacy is lost the moment the user already has doubts. It is very difficult to convince someone who has doubts about privacy that it is actually working. So we want to build this ecosystem of trust between governments, between providers, between tech providers as well, so that it can serve the user the best.”

What makes this project important for Europe and for citizens?

“I am very proud of this project because I think it symbolises all the good European values we want to promote. First, freedom of movement in the Schengen space, being able to cross borders using the wallet and leaving the passport at home. I think that is a very valuable use case for all users. There is also the freedom of services and capital, being able to speak to a Polish bank or a German bank whether you are a French or a Greek citizen. That is one of the main values we want to promote.”

The Aptitude project brings together partners from 11 EU Member States and Ukraine to test the European Digital Identity Wallet in real-life scenarios such as travel, payments and digital services. The goal is to make digital identity secure, trusted and citizen-controlled, while ensuring services can work seamlessly across borders.
