“Meet the People of Aptitude” introduces the experts and innovators working behind the Aptitude project, one of Europe’s large-scale pilots testing the European Digital Identity Wallet in real-life conditions.
In this interview, we meet Mathieu Weill, Director of Digital Transformation at the French Ministry of the Interior. He oversees France Identité Numérique, a flagship programme that is already transforming how French citizens interact with public services and that now sits at the heart of France’s contribution to the European Digital Identity Wallet strategy.
What role does France Identité play in the Ministry of the Interior’s digital transformation strategy?
“France Identité Numérique is truly a flagship project for the Ministry of the Interior, because it’s a key driver of simplification and transformation in the way public administration interacts with citizens. We already have more than 3 million users and extremely concrete use cases that make everyday life easier for people across France from identity verification and driving licences to boarding and now also authenticator to access the digital health card. France Identité Numérique can be a lever for many efficiencies and many simplifications, and it truly lies at the heart of our digital transformation strategy at the Ministry of the Interior.”
How does France Identité contribute to European cooperation in internal security?
“What is extremely important in the digital space is that the European level is the right level to act. We need cooperation between states, cooperation between states and businesses, and of course with civil society too. We can’t succeed alone, we have to act collectively. That is why Aptitude, which brings us together today, is an absolutely strategic initiative. And in this landscape, France Identité Numérique, is the French wallet, our national contribution to the European digital wallet strategy.”
The Aptitude project brings together partners from 11 EU Member States and Ukraine to test the European Digital Identity Wallet in real-life scenarios such as travel, payments and digital services. The goal is to make digital identity secure, trusted and citizen-controlled, while ensuring services can work seamlessly across borders.
