Portugal has become the first European Union Member State to launch a national Digital Business Wallet (BW), marking a significant milestone in public administration digitalisation. Officially introduced on 26 January 2026, the Portuguese Digital Business Wallet centralises essential company documents into a single, secure and legally valid digital channel.
Integrated into the gov.pt app, Portugal’s digital identity wallet, the Business Wallet consolidates key corporate documentation — including the Company (Electronic) Card, Tax Status, Social Security Contribution Status Statement, and the Central Register of Beneficial Owners. All documents are automatically updated and can be validated in real time via QR code, eliminating the need for paper certificates or multiple online portals.
The initiative forms part of Portugal’s broader State reform and digital transformation strategy, placing citizens and businesses at the centre of public services. By simplifying interactions between SMEs and public authorities, the Digital Business Wallet accelerates procedures related to licensing, public tenders and commercial negotiations, while enhancing administrative efficiency, regulatory compliance and digital interoperability.
Portugal’s implementation sets an important precedent for digital business services across the European Union, reinforcing the role of trusted digital wallets in supporting a more competitive and efficient Single Market.
Within this evolving European digital landscape, Aptitude project supports the advancement of interoperable digital wallet solutions and contributes to strengthening cross-border trust and secure digital service delivery across Member States.
